What is Pelvic Dysfunction?

There is more and more buzz on social media regarding the pelvic floor, which is really wonderful.  But let’s break down what it means to have pelvic dysfunction and why you may need a pelvic PT.

Weakness of the structures in the pelvic girdle may cause urinary or fecal incontinence, back pain or sacroiliac joint and hip pain.  On the flip side, if those muscles and structures are unable to relax properly, they may cause a variety of symptoms and disorders from pelvic pain to constipation to back or hip pain. During pregnancy the pelvic girdle is truly challenged and then under great stress during labor, which can also cause a variety of symptoms, like prolapse, urine leakage, bowel urgency or musculoskeltal pain.

Pelvic Dysfunction encompasses many different disorders and symptoms. What we as physical therapists are trained to treat are the pelvic floor muscles, the structure of the pelvic girdle (bones, joints and ligaments) as well as the connective tissue and musculature of the whole body.  As Physical Therapists trained in evaluating and treating the pelvic girdle, we can get to the bottom of what is causing your symptoms and restore balance to these structures.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is a good idea to see a pelvic PT.  Most states do not require a referral from your doctor to be evaluated and get answers to your issues!
