Why Is Sex Painful In Certain Positions?

This question was posed by a friend of mine.  The most likely answer to this is two-fold.  First, after having had three lovely children vaginally with tearing or episiotomy there may be scar tissue that when stretched or with pressure during intercourse causes pain.  The second possibility is that there may be one or several muscles within the pelvic girdle, the “pelvic floor” muscles that are tight and again when stretched or with pressure during intercourse are painful in certain positions.  The good news is that both situations are fairly easily treated with myofascial work to either the scar or the muscles or both.  With a good thorough evaluation of the pelvic girdle a physical therapist can help restore mobility to these tissues and pain with sex will go away. –Sarah Dominguez, PT, MSPT, CLT
