Celebrating Foundational Concepts: 13 years!

Thirteen years ago, Jenn and I took a big leap of faith, at least to us it felt that way.  Foundational Concepts began with a vision: to fill a gap in the Kansas City metro by creating a specialty clinic dedicated to pelvic floor physical therapy and whole-person healing. At the time, it was a big dream.

Pelvic health was still under-discussed, and underserved. Too many people were living with pelvic pain, incontinence, pregnancy and postpartum issues, bowel dysfunction, and cancer-related complications without knowing that specialized physical therapy could help. Access was limited, awareness was limited, and patients often struggled to find the right care.

We believed people with pelvic floor disorders deserved expert care, compassionate listening, and a place where they felt safe, supported, and understood. We believed treatment should do more than address symptoms. It should restore function, improve quality of life, and care for the whole person. That belief became the foundation of Foundational Concepts, specialty physical therapy.

Where We Started

Our original business plan was rooted in a simple but powerful idea: create a specialty physical therapy clinic that offered a holistic approach to pelvic health and oncology rehabilitation in a warm, healing environment. From the beginning, our mission was never just to open another clinic. We wanted to build something different.

We envisioned a practice that combined expert physical therapy with hands-on care, rooted in evidence and focusing on lifestyle support. We dreamed of a place that felt less clinical and more comforting. A place where patients could feel seen, heard, and truly cared for. Most importantly, we set out to serve a population that had long been overlooked.

At the time, pelvic health patients in Kansas City had very few options, especially outside of hospital-based systems. For many people in surrounding suburban and rural communities, access was even more limited. Patients were often left searching for answers after years of symptoms, misdiagnosis, or treatments that failed to address the true source of the problem. We knew there was a critical need for specialized, compassionate, evidence-based care.

The Heart Behind the Vision

Jenn and I were not only focused on market need, but on passion, purpose, and a deep belief in what this work could mean for people’s lives. We had seen firsthand the gaps in care. We had seen patients who were told their symptoms were normal when they were not. We had seen people living with pain, embarrassment, fear, and isolation. And we had seen the incredible difference that skilled pelvic health physical therapy could make.

That is what inspired us to build Foundational Concepts: a place where patients could receive expert care in an environment that prioritized individualized care, healing, and hope.

13 Years Later

Today, as we celebrate 13 years in business, we are overwhelmed with gratitude.

What started as one small clinic, in the back of an ortho practice,  and a clear mission, has grown into six clinic locations and a team of more than 20 incredible employees. That growth represents so much more than numbers. It represents trust from our patients, support from our community, strong relationships with providers, and the dedication of a team that believes deeply in this work. We are incredibly grateful to be where we are today.

When we look back at that original business plan, we see the same heart that continues to guide us now. A desire to serve. A commitment to excellent care. A passion for education. A belief that pelvic health matters and that people deserve access to specialized treatment that can change their lives.

Over the last 13 years, we have had the privilege of helping patients through some of the most vulnerable and important times in their lives. We have supported people during pregnancy and postpartum recovery, through menopause, after cancer treatment, after surgery, and through chronic pain and pelvic floor disorders that affected every part of daily living. We have walked alongside women, men, and people across the lifespan as they regained function, confidence, and hope.

That is the part of this milestone that means the most.

What We’re Most Thankful For

  • We are thankful for every patient who trusted us with their care.
  • We are thankful for every physician and provider who believed in our work and referred their patients to us.
  • We are thankful for every team member who has helped shape Foundational Concepts into what it is today.
  • And we are thankful for the opportunity to continue growing, learning, and serving our community in ways we once only imagined.

As we celebrate this anniversary, we do so with full hearts. We are proud of how far we’ve come, but even more than that, we are humbled.  We know our greatest purpose is still the same as it was on day one: to provide exceptional, compassionate care for people who need it.

To our patients, providers, staff, families, and community: thank you for being part of this journey. Thank you for believing in us. Thank you for helping Foundational Concepts grow from an idea into something far bigger than we could have imagined.

We are so grateful to be here, and so excited for what is still ahead.
